Hi everyone,

I'm writing with a little update on what’s been happening in the DGC BC sustainability sphere.

In case you missed it, on Earth Day my job title grew a little longer to become Assistant Business Agent and Sustainability Lead. It’s exciting to know that the DGC BC recognizes the importance that sustainable film production holds in our collective future. Stay tuned for a new DGC BC Sustainability Policy and other initiatives to encourage action and decarbonization in our industry!

Speaking of new titles--Associate Member Noah Rogers is our new DGC BC Sustainability Committee Chair. Noah has been busy delivering Reel Green's Sustainable Production Training–-a free online 2-hour primer full of interesting and useful information no matter what department you work in. If you haven’t taken it yet I highly recommend signing up!

On a more serious note: the impacts of climate change can be overwhelming. From increasingly uncontrollable wildfires to record-breaking soaring temperatures and other severe weather phenomena, it’s easy to have feelings of climate anxiety. If this is something weighing on you, consider attending a Climate Café! Already active in other cities around the world, Climate Cafés are an inclusive space for dialogue and support without judgement. It’s a place to express feelings and build community rather than tackle solutions.

The first Climate Café in Vancouver is happening on Thursday, May 30, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Spartacus Books (1983 Commercial Drive). More info on the event here. Vancouver's Climate Café is presented by The Sustainable Act, a local initiative promoting sustainability in the arts, spearheaded by Smiely Khurana.

If you’re reading this far, I want to hear from you! Let me know what obstacles and challenges you see to greening our industry. The DGC BC Sustainability Committee wants to film short videos on local sets to show what’s being done. Reach out if we can visit yours, and tell me what your production is doing to make change happen.

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”
