1st Assistant Director (1st AD)
Required to upgrade to 1st Assistant Director.
DURATION: 2 days (8 hours per day)
FORMATS OFFERED: Hybrid (Day 1 is in-person; Day 2 is on Zoom)
PREREQUISITES: Must be a Full Member in Good Standing in the 2nd Assistant Director category.
Description
This two-day interactive class prepares participants for the role and duties of the 1st Assistant Director. Day 1 focuses on the responsibilities during prep and on set, including breaking down a script and preparing to create a one-line schedule. Day 2 continues the discussion on set duties and safety, and covers how to create an effective schedule for the project.
This course does not teach participants how to use Movie Magic Scheduling.
Assignment

Participants will be required to read a script and create a one-line schedule in Movie Magic Scheduling (MMS), which they will present to the class on Day 2.
Supplemental Information
- Classes occur on two separate weekends with four weeks between Days 1 and 2 to allow participants time to complete the assignment.
Course Materials
- Materials will be provided online through the DGC BC training website.
Technical Requirements
- A laptop with the Movie Magic Scheduling software installed.
- An internet connection to access course materials.
- Zoom classes require a computer with a functioning webcam, microphone, and a stable internet connection.
Expectations
- Participants must have a working knowledge of the Movie Magic Scheduling software as they will be required to create a one-line schedule in the software.
Registration
- Registration is by invitation only through Eventbrite, for Members who meet the prerequisites.
- If space is available, the course will be advertised in the E-bulletin and Members can apply to attend. Approval to register is granted by the 1st AD instructor and the AD Caucus Advisory Committee.
Movie Magic Scheduling Software
- If you are not familiar with the MMS software, we recommend the EP Academy MMS online course, which is eligible for the DGC BC training reimbursement.
