Director
Manitoba District Council
With 30 years of experience, 50 feature films and over 150 episodes of network television to his credit, François Balcaen learned filmmaking from the inside out. From the set of the Oscar winning film "Capote" to the jungles of Panama and the frozen tundra of Churchill, Canada, François is a multi-disciplinary storyteller that possesses one of the best creative problem-solving minds around. His recent directorial credits include "La Grande Traversée", a 10-hour documentary mini-series nationally broadcast on Radio-Canada. This adventure series shot almost exclusively on the 3-masted sail ship "Picton Castle", which crossed the North Atlantic Ocean in the summer of 2016. "La Grande Traversée" was critically acclaimed and was nominated for the French Language Gemini award for Best Cinematography in 2017.
