Marie-Hélène Cousineau co-directed Before Tomorrow, an historical drama set in 1840's and based on a novel by acclaimed Danish writer Jorn Riel. The film won the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival Award for Best Canadian First Feature Film as well as many other Canadian awards. It was nominated for 9 Genie awards (Canadian Film awards) in 2009. Uvanga, the second feature Marie-Hélène co-directed with Madeline Ivalu, is a contemporary family drama set in Igloolik and toured international festivals. The film is distributed by Mongrel Media and was nominated for 4 Jutra (Quebec film awards) in 2014. In 2014, the film SOL, which Marie-Hélène co-directed with Susan Avingaq, won the Grand Prize for Best Canadian Feature at Rencontres Internationales du Documentaire de Montreal and was selected by TIFF in their Top Ten Canadian Films 2015. It won the Best Documentary Program Award (2016) and was nominated in 5 categories. In 2017 she co-directed (with Michelle Desrosiers) the feature Angelique's Isle, released in 2019. It is a historical drama, taking place on Lake Superior in 1840's. Her latest feature Restless River was in the national competition of the Festival du Nouveau cinéma in Montreal last October. She lives in Montreal, her hometown.
