An Ontario resident, Penelope Buitenhuis has directed in multiple genres from action to thriller, horror, drama and improv comedy. While living in Paris, then Berlin, she became internationally known making 20 shorts, including Llaw, about the fall of the Berlin wall, earning her a retrospective at MOMA. She wrote and directed her first feature Trouble in German and English for ZDF, premiering at the Berlinale, winning festivals worldwide. In North America she directed the features Boulevard, Dangerous Attraction and Hard Ride to Hell and 19 movies for television including the acclaimed Giant Mine for CBC, and the cult classic Killer Bees. Episode credits include, among others, Lonesome Dove, Kung Fu, Bliss, the pilot for Cold Squad, 3 seasons of the improv comedy Train 48 and most recently Pretty Hard Cases for CBC/NBC. She works fast with a focus on achieving authentic acting and interesting style. Her most recent feature A Wake, was nominated for a DGC award and won 8 best film prizes, including the Carmel Film festival, where Clint Eastwood honored her with the award. Penelope works and resides out of Toronto.
