This International Women’s Day we are featuring eight DGC productions from across the country that are both created by women and tell stories that focus on women. From documentaries to TV Movies, from key icons in Toronto’s LGBT community to Canada’s first female infantry officer. Look out for these 2025 productions!

 

Out Standing

This military drama is filmed in Montreal and directed by DGC Quebec’s Mélanie Charbonneau. It is based on the memoir Out Standing In The Field by Sandra Perron, who is known as Canada’s first female infantry officer.

“From the moment I read Sandra Perron’s memoir, I knew I had to make it into a film,” said Charbonneau. “Sandra fiercely pushed into uncharted territory so that those who followed could go even further. It’s such an honor to bring her story to the big screen.”

Small Achievable Goals

This freshly released DGC Ontario production is a comedy following Kris and Julie, two wildly different women on an unpredictable journey of transformation as they battle menopause, midlife and making a podcast - together. Watch the first two episodes, both directed by Zoe Hopkins, now on CBC Gem.

Deux femmes en or (Two Women)

DGC Quebec Production Two Women is directed by Chloé Robichaud with production design by Louisa Schabas. It is the winner of the 2025 Sundance Special Jury Prize. 

"Committed and feminist, Deux femmes en or tells the story of Violette and Florence, two neighbors abandoned by their partners who embark on a reappropriation of their sexuality. " 

A Quebec release is scheduled for May 30.

Doc

Molly Parker in Fox's 'Doc.'

This Ontario shot medical drama tells the story of Dr. Amy Larsen who loses her memory during a car accident. She must return to being an intern and somehow rebuild her life from the pieces that remain.

Last month, Doc was renewed for a second season just two weeks before the season one finale. Watch the first eight episodes, including episode six directed by Amanda Row, now on Global TV. Read about the 22 episode renewal here

 

Robin Roberts Presents: I Will Survive: The Gloria Gaynor Story

Released this February, this Vancouver shot musical directed by Alicia K. Harris is the official biopic of legendary singer Gloria Gaynor. Rising from humble beginnings and overcoming personal challenges, singer Gloria Gaynor soars to the top of the music charts with her legendary hit "I Will Survive."

The House that Michelle Built

This upcoming DGC Manitoba documentary is the latest from documentary director Alison Duke, who is also credited as a co-writer. 

The House that Michelle Built is an intricate, emotional documentary that captures the enigmatic life of the late Michelle Ross, born Earl Barrington Shaw, whose untimely death shrouded her story in mystery. The Jamaican Canadian drag queen is considered one of the icons of the Toronto LGBTQ community. 

 

Blueberry Grunt

Blueberry Grunt was filmed in Newfoundland and directed by Sherry White with Rhonda Buckley as co-producer (with Ruth Lawrence). The film was shot with a crew that was 63% women. 

Vivian and Harold empbark on a blueberry-picking camping trip to celebrate their 19th wedding anniversary. However, Harold's constant chatter and Vivian's quiet judgement creat a bubbling tension. When a fight ensues and their argument excalates in a life-or-death situation, Vivian has to head out on her own to seek help, encountering several mishaps.

  • The entire Transport Department was female, including dailies!
