ENTRY LEVEL (PERMITTEE)
What is a permittee?
According to the DGC's Standard (Core) Agreement:
1.39 Permittee
Permittee means a person who is engaged hereunder, and who has been authorized in writing by the District Council to work within the District Council’s jurisdiction and with other Guild Members pursuant to this Agreement. Permittee is deemed to include a Loan-out Corporation.
From the DGC's perspective, a permittee is a non-union individual hired to fill a DGC job category provided no DGC members are available to be hired to do that job, and who has been authorized or given permission by the District Council to work in our jurisdiction. A permittee hired to work on in a DGC job category must fill out a DGC work permit form and will have work permit fees deducted from their pay. While working as a permittee on a DGC production, a DGC permittee has the same rights and responsibilities as a DGC member, but they are not a DGC member.
IN ORDER TO QUALIFY FOR PERMITTEE STATUS WITH DGC MARITIMES, A PERMITTEE IS REQUIRED TO:
- Be a minimum or 18 years of age
- Reside in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, or Prince Edward Island
- Provide proof of Canadian Citizenship or Permanent Residence (acceptable documents include: Canadian Birth Certificate, Canadian Passport, Certificate of Permanent Residence, and/or Indian Status Card)
- Submit a one-page résumé detailing their film and/or relevant job experience
An introductory email, along with relevant documentation, may be sent to permittee@dgcmaritimes.ca.
Please be sure to read the FAQ at the bottom of this page before submitting your documents. It will save you time!
Once the DGC Maritimes office has reviewed these documents, and qualifications are verified, the individual will receive confirmation from the MRC office. They will then be registered in the DGC Maritimes Permittee Program and listed on our “Permittee List”. Please note that this list is updated regularly. If hired on a DGC production, and if they have filled out a deal memo and work permit form, permittees may count their working days towards their membership working day requirements.
Once on the list, prospective permittees are advised to contact the office once a year to state whether or not they wish to remain on the list, and, if so, to email in an updated resume. Those who do not update their status once a year will be removed from the list.
All those approved for the DGC Maritimes Permittee Program will be notified by email about upcoming MRC-exclusive training opportunities.
THE DGC Maritimes OFFICE DOES NOT DISPATCH. Those on the permittee list need to be proactive in seeking gainful employment. The Guild will provide productions with names, email addresses, and phone numbers of prospective permittees and their resumes upon request. However, it is up to the individual to be in touch with productions to determine if they are accepting resumes, and to let them know that you are interested and available.
