When the recently-released Viggo Mortensen-directed (and written, produced, acted and scored!) feature The Dead Don’t Hurt came to shoot some scenes near Tofino a while back, DGC BC Member Priscilla Yeo, working then as the Location Manager, had to do some convincing at Parks Canada for them to allow filming near the spectacular Pacific Rim National Park Reserve.

The park and area around it is usually off-limits to productions in order not to disturb the pristine ecological reserve, but by selecting their shots carefully and using available lighting, no heavy cabling, and no diesel generators, they were granted access to a portion of the beach and land bordering the reserve. the crew were extremely mindful to keep their environmental impact minimal, to keep food inaccessible to wildlife, and to avoid the introduction of invasive species. An environmental impact assessment was commissioned and a guardian from the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation accompanied the crew.

To chronicle their experience there, this wonderful 3-minute behind-the-scenes video was produced, highlighting their efforts. Kudos to the team’s dedication to preserve the natural splendour of one of BC’s many stunning locations. Watch for a cameo by some very attractive mobile electric power units as well as Mr. Mortensen himself expressing his gratitude to Canadians… Viggo: you’re welcome!
