On August 4, 2005 the Directors Guild of Canada's (DGC) president Alan Goluboff and DGC director member Atom Egoyan presided over the announcement of the nominees for the Guild's 2005 DGC Awards. (for some photos from the event, click here.)

"This year's DGC Awards is an important celebration for the Guild as peers recognize and celebrate the movies and television programming that entertained and enlightened Canadians in 2004. The quality and quantity of awards submissions by DGC members, despite a difficult year, shows the vibrancy and resilience of this growing industry, " said DGC president Alan Goluboff.

Award-winning DGC director member Atom Egoyan was on hand to announce the nominees at a press conference held at the Park Hyatt. Mr. Egoyan's recently completed movie, Where the Truth Lies, will have a gala screening at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival. He is the acclaimed director of The Sweet Hereafter, Exotica and the 2003 DGC Awards-nominated Ararat.

The fourth annual Awards will be hosted by one of Canada's finest comic actors, Joe Flaherty. An alumnus of SCTV, Mr. Flaherty has appeared in dozens of films and television shows, most recently as the voice of Jeb the goat in Home on the Range.

It was also announced that the DGC will honour, posthumously, director Daniel Petrie Sr. His family will be on hand to accept the DGC's Lifetime Achievement Award. This award recognizes a member's full career and body of work. Dan Petrie Sr.'s career spanned fifty years, working in Canada and the US. Most notably, he made television history when he directed three of the five Emmy Award nominees for Best Production: Sybil, Eleanor and Franklin: The White House Years and Harry Truman: Plain Speaking. During his long and successful career he was the recipient of Golden Globe, Genie, Cable Ace, Christopher, Peabody and DGA awards. His feature films include The Assistant, Cocoon: The Return, Fort Apache The Bronx, Resurrection, A Raisin in the Sun and his semi-autobiographical work, The Bay Boy.

The DGC's Distinguished Service Award, which recognizes outstanding service to the membership of the Directors Guild of Canada, will be presented to former DGC president and tireless volunteer Alan Erlich. Alan directed last year's DGC Awards show and will once again take the director's chair to make sure this year's gala runs smoothly. His biography is also included in this package.

Hours and hours of viewing over 390 submissions is definitely a labour of love for the Awards' 107 jury members. It is no easy task but it is a pleasurable one, and many jurors volunteer year after year for the chance to review and nominate the best work by their peers. The result is 79 nominations in 20 categories. The shortlist of nominees can be viewed by clicking here.

The winners will be announced at a gala DGC Awards dinner on Saturday, October 1 at The Carlu, 444 Yonge Street, Toronto.
